Run Scandisk before Defrag to check if everyhting is smooth. Especially an error in the FAT would stop DF from proceeding, and it not always tells you that there is a problem with the HD.

Check your regional settings and the daylight savings function. Sometimes the get reset - screwing up the displayed time.
Otherwise, I agree that a 'wall'-version is better to track time, BUT,...

This problem occured on WIN98/NT&2000 systems:
When trying to install an accounting software (A4) error messages come up saying nnn.dll is read-only our in use.
