Hi, I've been away for a long while and am running an iMac with OS x Mavericks. For Windows access I've installed VMware Fusion and MS Windows XP Pro, which handles my PC needs. Problem is that I do...

Jdc2000, My interest is only an "intellectual curiosity". I've been aware of hex files and editors since the earliest days of DOS and would love to know the meaning of those special characters....

Can the unreadable characters in a hex file be read? For example: 13653
Thanks for looking. (Hope this is in the correct forum.)

Sorry for the long delay in posting back. Been traveling. I sanded smooth the contact surface of the original heat sink, cleaned the surface of the processor, re-applied thermal compound and...

My cpu is a pentium 4 running in the plain vanilla style. I've been using AG5 for years without a problem and will probably continue with as my 'needs' are well within the normal operating range....

Got it thank you. Will post back with results.

I followed the link and read the article carefully. Still not certain whether after lapping the HS, should thermal compound be applied directly to the HS, (as well as the CPU)?

Train / dneilson, yes the machine runs a bit longer now. I've looked at the bottom side of the heat sink and it appears to have an irregular surface. While awaiting the new cooler from Hong Kong, I'm...

Truth be told... I've swapped out just about everything except:
Heat sink & fan
push button a/c switch
Btw... just bought a replacement heat sink & fan on ebay. Will take about a week for...

Train, perhaps my last note wasn't clear. The house fan did not help at all. I understand the logic for replacing the fan, but why the cooler. How can the heat sink fail?

Train, improbable as it sounds, I placed a large window fan close to the open computer case, turned the fan on to highest speed and started the boot. Machine ran for about 30 -40 seconds and shut...

At the start of the boot, cpu fan is running at what I think is a "normal" speed. After about 15 seconds it hugely speeds up. About another 10 or 15 seconds later the system shuts down. House fan...

Cooler fan is working and is clean. Will set up a house fan tomorrow and post back. Thanks all for hanging in with me. Much appreciated.

Train, I completely removed all traces of the compound from the processor and heat sink; and reapplied a very thin coating that completely covered the surface of the processor. System is still...

OK, my error. I'll redo the thermal compound and post back.

I hope you are right. There doesn't seem to be any other explanation. I applied a small amount of thermal compound and spread it with the edge of a credit card. Applied to the top of the processor...

OK, I'm totally bewildered. I have swapped out the power supply, system board, processor & memory from a similar computer. (Heat sink and fan are properly re-installed.) Repaired the clamp holding...

I 've realized that the 'clamp' holding the heat sink to the processor was broken where (3 of the 4) screws holding it in place are. Will get a new clamp, reapply thermal compound and post back....

I'll have to work very fast; will try in the morning. Checked the capacitors... all look good. Where is the temperature sensor located?

I removed and re-applied thermal compound; and re-seated the heat sink and cooling fan. Issue remained unchanged. I just bought a processor on ebay for $5. and will try it and post back when it...
