Thanks -- I will try again with a full backup instead of the append option.

In XP Pro, I went to All Programs-> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup
Cancelled Wizard mode, closed it and then reopened.
Went to tab Schedule Jobs -> Add Job -> Next -> Back up selected...
