Broadcasted, ALWAYS. Period.
Because many wireless devices and in fact, 802.11 itself depends on it. It's a functional part of 802.11, not a security risk.
The whole idea of "hiding" your...

Broadband modems (DOCSIS, xDSL) always act as a bridge. Authentication isn't usually needed with DSL as it's a single, dedicated line (at least from the last multiplexer).

Actually it matters a lot.

The feature you are referring to is called captive portal. It's usually only found on APs marketed for hotspot use, but you can implement it yourself in a couple of ways. Some "firewall distros"...

If there were no such thing as a "gigabit router" any link faster than OC-24 would be useless. Cisco's 12000 series can route up to 60Gbps. The latest BFR (yes, it stands for Big Fast Router) from...

15,000 is the fastest spindle speed you'll find right now, but it's not the biggest factor in drive performance - seek time is. Given any random IO seek time dominates the total time for access. ...

DSL is over one copper pair. In larger/newer markets the pair will be digitally combined with others and lead to the central office. In smaller/older markets you actually have a copper pair running...

I'm suprised to see such a lean against Maxtor. Usually these threads are equal portion for, against and ambivalent. Photolady is probably the only one of us that has a valid perspective seeing as...

The OP is using 802.11g which also uses an OFDM PHY. With 802.11a it would worsen the OP's problem as there is greater path loss due to the higher frequency and the fact that 802.11a radios tend to...

Solid is tip and striped is ring. Transmit and recieve pairs aren't defined by the Cat5 specs, they are defined by the protocol that uses the cable. Each protocol is different, but with 10/100BaseT...

Meanwhile, any additional ideas are welcome.
If you're still wanting to analyze the traffic you could just Iris as I mentioned above.

If winpcap is giving you issues try out Iris which I linked above.

IIRC WinPCap is required for ethereal on Windows. I believe the ethereal installer comes with winpcap though so you'll need to reboot if you haven't done so. If you don't want to install WinPCap...

The whole idea is a little strange, but it's wierd that you'd consider putting the "lock" on the laptop and not the ethernet jacks. They aren't your laptops and what's to stop anyone from using...

Ethereal is pretty much the standard for FOSS sniffers/analyzers. If you want to let it run for a little and then make the pcap available to us I'd be happy to analyze it for you.
Another utility...

In every networking text I've seen the verb replicate is used. I've never seen "duplicate" in place of replicate.
The fact that the adjective versus the verb form are more distinct helps in usage...

It's likely you are having a link/duplex setting issue. Either some hosts are not autonegotiating correctly or are incorrectly forced into the wrong mode.
I'd check that some machines weren't...

There's a whole school of thought as far as reducing machine noise, but we don't really need to get that complex. You could replace your fan, but there's a good chance that a drop of oil will fix...

"Bastion" is a term used to describe a machine that has been fortified to be used as a machine exposed to the Internet.
What make/model router do you have?

Small Business Server has VPN endpoint support, but I wouldn't reccomend using a Windows Server machine as a bastion host. You'd be better off, IMO, by buying a VPN router or finding an old machine...
