When I try to open a Word document after latest windows 10 update (1803) it crashes. This happens also when I try to recover my word backups on EaseUs Todo backup program and was always able to do this before that update? I suspect the problem is with word and not the backup program.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Can you just start Word, without opening a document, without any crashing? There should be an entry for Word somewhere in Microsoft's Start menu somewhere, or, you could search for it.
If you can start Word without opening a document, and it doesn't crash, can you create a new document and save it? If yes, can you then double click on the new saved test document and have it open without crashing?
Yes, I can do this now but earlier today I could not!
So, is everything back to normal now, or are there still some unresolved issues?
It appears that everything is back to normal. I will wait a few more days to be sure before I mark it "resolved".
