[RESOLVED] VGA yo HDMI
What ho one and all,
I have finally sold my soul to the devil and purchased a TV!
Intend to connect an old laptop that only has VGA output, via a VGA to HDMI converter. Some of the available converters have a laptop headphone out for sound and require USB (presumably from the laptop's USB socket) for power.
But I have also seen a converter that only has the USB; they say it handles both power and sound (http://www.cablesdirect.co.uk/search...MI-SVGACAB-USB)
Is this the way to go or should it be the headphone and USB power cable?
Toodle pip and thanks
Rex

Obviously, the title should have been VGA TO HDMI

The simplest way would be to use a VGA to VGA cable from laptop to TV and a stereo mini to mini cable for audio from headphone out to VGA/audio input.. assuming the TV has a VGA input... most do. It would also eliminate the need for a converter.. the cheaper ones may not give you the best resolution and picture quality would suffer.

Thanks. Unfortunately, new (ish) TVs do not have VGA any longer. Two USB and two HDMI.
Of course, I may be mistake and I have yet to open the box, but I do not see any reference to VGA on any of the reviews or blurb.
My question is really, does USB do both power and sound?

Post the make and model of the TV.
I did not see any reviews or price on that adapter, so it is hard to say if it would be worth trying. If it lives up to the specs, it should be OK, although you will probably still need a long HDMI cable. 26 cm is probably too short.

The TV is a Sony KDL 32RD433.
Agreed, I also see no price but will call them in the a.m. And ask, among other things, if it does not work, can I return it? Longer HDMI cable is on its way.
Just did not know that a USB does both sound (in this case) and power.

Thanks; will probably give it a try.

I plugged the USB/VGA converter into my laptop and it does indeed provide sound to the TV.
Unfortunately, the laptop is old (ish) and only has W2k on-board, so the latest media players will not run mp4 files. Likewise, the old versions of those same players do not recognise mp4.

It comes with WMP which I dislike. Have MPC-HC and VLC. Also an old version of Power DVD. Interestingly, small file size mp4 look better on VLC than MPC. DVD looks good.
Just connected the TV to the internet with a Powerline adaptor and all is running well. Don't know what all my questions were about since it has been hassle free.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions.
