Use higher versions for newer OS. WinNT is compatible with MPS 1.1 and Win2K with MPS 1.4. With Linux, it depends on the kernel used.
With MPS 1.4 you can use virtual IRQ's (more than 16 IRQ adresses) and SMP addressing is done differently (faster).
I recommended MPS 1.4 for Win2K, also using it at my Abit BP6 with dual Celery 500@600.
I've seen IRQs above #16 on my DualPIII with MPS1.4...Quote:

So does this mean, there are no IRQ conflicts possible anymore?

No and no.
You still can get IRQ conflicts. It's not so every device should have it's own IRQ then, but it also depends on the mainboard architecture (i.e. at my BP6 mobo the PCI slot #3 shares it's IRQ with the onboard HPT366 ATA66 IDE controller and the AGP slot shares the IRQ with PCI slot #1, no matter how the IRQ is assigned). Sharing may not harm, but it also depends on whether the card used supports/likes IRQ sharing or not (i.e. geforce cards, winmodems, some soundcards hates IRQ sharing).
Virtual IRQ's aren't for multiproc mobos only. But the MPS option indeed is show in BIOS of multiproc mobo only. Uniproc mobos uses another virtual IRQ system. Dunno how it's called.
