Where are photos sent to a Whatsapp phone stored?

Someone using WhatsApp sent 100 photos to my WhatsApp account. I can view them on my LG LS620 smart phone.

Assuming I have not deleted them or moved them to an external memory chip in the phone .... are these photos stored on a WhatsApp server some place or on my phone (thereby using up precious storage space on my internal memory)?

So my guess is that aren't stored on their server.
