Computer locks up
OK, we've recently put together a brand new computer, and it locks up after
a random amount of time. No more than 3 minutes though. The only things
inside the computer are:
Abit VA6 mobo
FCPGA PIII 733 w/slotket
128MB PC133 RAM
Maxtor 15 GB 7200
Diamond Stealth III AGP
Floppy Drive
Hitachi 6x DVDROM
We're trying to install Windows. We boot off of the floppy, start running
setup.exe off of the CD, and the computer gets to a random point in the
installation and then stops responding. It never gets out of the DOS area
of installation though. The same thing happens booting off of CD. We have
plugged and unplugged every cable, the RAM has been taken out and put back
in. I have no idea what's making the comp stop running. Any ideas? Thanks in
advance.

I had this same problem. Dos works fine but Windows would freeze. I had to slow down the system bus, but I was able to increase the cpu multiplier by 1/2.

Well, actually, DOS doesn't work fine. It locks up there if we don't even try to install Windows. Just navigating through DOS, copying files, etc, the comp freezes up. I just do NOT get it.

The current FC-PGA processors require a cool 1.6V core voltage setting, which I think is not supported by your motherboard. This setting has to be manually set on the slotket. Not all slotkets support all slot1 boards, but this is being udated all time. http://support.intel.com/support/pro...ii/ssalist.htm http://thetechnozone.com/pcbuyersgui.../Slotkets.html

robwes, the BIOS set it to 1.7v. We changed it to 1.6v and everything's perfect. Thanks so much.
