Win2000 and ESS 1869 Audio

I installed win2000 on my Compaq. It has an ESS1869 sound and the volume control shows up in the taskbar but when I try to adjust the volume my volume level automatically goes back to the lowest level so I actually have no sound until I turn the volume all the way back up and I have sound for just a sec. until the slider goes back down automatically. Any help would really be appreciated. I removed the device in the device manager and restarted but it allways redetect the same thing on startup with the same result.
I can boot up into win98 and everything is fine. Is this a driver problem?
