When editing with IrfanView, How can I tell the actual size?

I am editing a scanned image with IrfanView. The size that I want to achieve is .45 inches tall and 5-3/4 inches long. That is the size of the actual image that I want to resize, not including the background which I will cut off of the printed image.

The image is originally 8.5 x 11.67 when scanned (1275 wide x 1750 high in pixels). The size of the image before scanning is 5-3/4" long and .80 inches tall. When I resize the image how will I know when viewing the image with IrfanView that I have achieved the desired size?

In Image/Information you can find out everything there is to know about the image. In the Resize dialogue you can see the actual image size and then specify the new size that you want it to be. In the Set New Size box you can specify the units (inches, etc).

What I am hoping to find out is what size the "Jolson" portion only of the image will be after resizing. Is it possible to isolate just that part of the image? My only other option seems to be to guess at the new size and print it each time to see if it will fit. I want the "The Jolson Story" image to be 5-3/4" long and .80 inches tall.

You'll need to rotate that scan to about 359 degrees to level it. Then you can crop it to the exact size you need if you can convert pixels per inch to inches. The size of the selection you'll be using to crop shows in the IrfanView title bar.

You can crop and undo if you want to experiment. You don't have to print to see the size. The actual size of the cropped image (in inches) shows in the Image/Information box.

I'm having trouble resizing Jolson to 5.75" wide and .50" high. I start with a new scan of the original and first do a Custom/Fine Rotation to 359.00 degrees. I then select Resize and tick "inches" in the Set new size box. The original size is 8.71 wide x 11.82 high (1307 x 1773 pixels). When I change the width to 5.75" the height changes to 8.30.

The width of the original Jolson image is fine at 5.75. The height needs to be no taller than .50 (preferably .45). I think the problem is tha IrfanView is "seeing" the full 8.5 x 11" scan tray size and I don't know how to tell it that I only want to resize the Jolson part of that image. I need to know how DanC resized his image.

I first did a rough crop of the image. If you're careful you can crop it to size and not have to resize it at all. Watch the numbers in the title bar change as you tweak the selection that you will crop. You can drag and fine tune the sides of the selection after you've made the initial selection.

To do a crop you first left click and hold down the button to drag a selection. Click and drag the sides of the selection to fine tune it to size. That selection will be the size of your new image.

Go to Edit, Crop Selection. That will remove everything you have not selected.

307WRC--When working in Irfanview's View|Resize/Resample dialog box, try clicking off the check in the Preserve Aspect Ratio box before making adjustments to the dimensions.

P.S. Once you check or uncheck that box, I think that remains the default the next time you open Resize/Resample, so remember you might have to change again if you want the aspect ratio to be maintained.
