Extacting CAB file: "access denied"

In an attempt to correct a problem with Windows 95 setup sequence I received notice that "Setup has detected a corrupt Setup CAB file." etc. I think I know which CAB file is corrupt and I have access to an uncorrupt version in a Windows 95 CD. When I try to extract or move or copy the good CAB the response is "acccess denied." Does anyone have any suggestion as to how to overcome this denial of access?

You might ask why I cannot use the CD to setup Windows95 and the answer is that this source of setup "has found compressed volume or disk-cache utility" which has to be removed. The knowledge base document on this subject says that I have to reformat the hard drive in the process of removing these settings. I cannot do this because I cannot access my extrenal Iomega Zip drive so as to do an orderly backup before wiping out everything on the hard drive. If anyone has any suggestion as to how to alter the drive access settings so as to regain access to the external drive please let me know.

The good cab may be protected, right click on the file go to properties and rmove checkmark Read Only.

Piecing together you other posts you were running Windows and after modifications, you are no longer able to get into Windows.Thus you cannot access the ZIP drive. Go to Iomega Downloads and select your drive (ZIP 100 or 250), select DOS for the operating system. This will give you drivers to access the drive at DOS that you can add to a boot disk. See Boot Disk under Adding an Iomega ZIP Drive to your Startup Disk you can find what files to add and how to set them up. You should add EMM386.EXE and use DEVICEHIGH= for devices in the CONFIG.SYS and LH in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to keep more Conventional memory. Note that at DOS you will not be able to salvage Long Filenames.

The error message Setup Found a Compressed Volume or a Disk-Cache Utility seems to indicate that you are using Windows 95 Retail, which may not work correctly with a Windows 98 or Windows 95b boot disk. The files will have a date stamp of 7-11-95 if that is the version.

Then there is also the possibility that you so have a compressed drive. Boot from a boot disk and at the A:\> prompt type:
dir c:\*.ini /a
and look for DRVSPACE.INI or DBLSPACE.INI
If either exists, a compressed drive may be present. You might try this on D:\ drive, E:\ drive, F:\ drive, or H:\ drive. If the compressed drive mounts properly at boot, the actual C drive will change, usually to one of these other drives. See Doublespace/Drivespace and Windows 95 for more. You can press CTRL and F5 at bootup to prevent the drive from mounting. That will make sure it is C drive you are looking at.

If you are running a compressed drive and the setup attempts to use that as the TEMPORARY Directory, there will be insuficient space and that could cause an extraction error.

We need to know a little what you are working with. If you copy the install files from the CDROM to the hard drive and install from there, you may get around some of the problems. But you must have enough space on the drive for the files and maybe 100mb of extra space for the TEMP files.

When you boot what for you get, a DOS prompt?
Is the CDROM loading?
