Blank screen
My windows XP froze and I restarted with Ctrl/Alt/Delete.
When it restarted it had a windows xp screen with no tool bars or icons.
I have tried F8 for safe mode but all that happens is a screen full of lines of text starting with:
multi(0)disk(0)etc and ending with different drivers.
Any help appreciated.

If there's any chance of getting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt then you should be able to use System Restore:
How to start System Restore from the Command Prompt
Otherwise you probably have no option except a repair install of XP. Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by presssing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.
You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP1, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards.
