Interesting CD info Question

Now we all know that we can retrieve track information for a given CD by using the CDDB services provided on the internet.
Providing the CD in question is in the database.

However I downloaded some real old Dutch 78 RPM records from a site in Holland. They were delivered as streaming audio and I captured and recorded them with Cool Edit Pro.

No problem.

However when I made a copy of this CD to give to my brother, I used Nero's CD copier to make an extra copy.

Now hier is the interesting part. Nero retrieved the title and duration of each and every track and displayed them on the screen while burning the tracks.

Now for the question of the decade:

If Nero can find the titles of these tracks. which are only listed on the CD as Track 1.cda Track 2.cda etc. while burning a copy. WHERE IS THE SOFTWARE PROGRAM, THAT WILL LET ME DO THE SAME FOR PRINTING CD LABELS AND JEWEL CASE COVERS ??

HOW COME WE NEED CDDB AT ALL ? SEEING THE INFORMATION IS RECORDED ON THE CD ANYWAY ???

HAS ANY ONE EVER LOOKED INTO THIS ????

Thanks, John I will give it another try. I bought the plus version once, and uninstalled it. I do not have a backup of the thing either. However, I did find a record of my order and registration number on my machine.
I have fired off, an email to tech support, and see if I STILL CAN GET A FREE UPGRADE. I bought it on 05/29/2002.

The way you described it, would it seem possible that Nero put the song info code on the CD when you first burned it? So when you went to copy the CD, it found all the info?

A good way to test this would be to use some other burning software to copy the original CD you burned with Nero - if it does not recognize the info, then it's something Nero added only for Nero to use.

I got a link from musiscmatch to download a free version, I purchased lifetime free upgrades when I bought it, and put in a CD I had burned, way before I even heard of Nero.
It was burned with Easy CD Creator version 2.0 (OLD) And an old HP 4x burner. Now I make a 60 min CD in <5 minutes.
Musicmatch displayed all the track's , names and duration times.

My question still remains, why do we need CDDB when the info is on the CD somewhere? Where is that neat little software program that will let me browse the CD instead of the "track xxx.cda"" that I get now?

Note: Do not forget, we are talking about, home burned CD's for which there is no CDDB to be had ever.

Just performed an interesting test.
I DISCONNECTED from the internet. Put in a commercial CD.
And pushed the botton to close the drive door.

The program stated "Now accessing CDDB" Of course it COULD NOT DO SO, because I had disconnected myself from the net.

( The most terrible feeling of loniness overcame me.) :D

But it worked Musicmatch came up with the tracknames, and durations without going on the net.

All the information therefore is on the CD, be it home burned or commercial.

See above to get back to the original question.

As an afterthought, my CD player in the living room comes up with all the information, track name, duration, total time etc. So back to: "where is that little CD browser.

CD-Text is a standard that allows disc and track information to be embedded on an audio CD. The data can be read by some CD players, providing a way to have disc information available without having to enter it manually or look it up in a database.

Adding CD-Text to the discs you record requires a compatible recorder and capable software. Support was scarce in mid-1999, but is more common now.

The currently available software supports writing of album title, artist names, and track titles, and can copy discs with CD-Text data already on them. Storing lyrics within the tracks is possible but not widely supported.

Not all CD players and CD-ROM drives can read CD-Text. If this feature is important to you, check the specifications before you buy. Some programs, notably Windows Media Player, claim to read CD-Text but will actually use an Internet database instead.

Some MD recorders have a feature that lets you copy the CD-Text info from audio CDs (e.g. "Joint Text"), but it appears that some CDs prohibit the copying. The result is the message "Text Protected".

I believe Sony and Phillips invented this format and thus license other companies to use it.

I use Feurio , it can read cdtext cds (assuming the actual cdrom itself is capable of reading cdtext) and I just press the "Cover" button to launch its cover editor with all the information already filled in . Feurio can also write cdtext if the burner can .

Of course a lot of audio cds don't have cdtext , thus I have to use the cddb lookup .. plus not all cdroms can read cdtext even if it existed so again cddb is needed.

If I just want to play a cd and not have a large program running I use the CD Text Player from Plextor, it reads the text if any and can play the cd digitally , useful since the sound lead is not currently connected to my cdrom .

Musicmatch jukebox does both read and write CD text while burning, and playing, luckely for me, both my burner and my CD ROM can read it. Therefore the track, title and duration show up when using jukebox. Mediaplayer (hate that thing) and Soundblaters playcenter do not seem to support this.

First of all thanks for the very informative answer. I use Music Match Jukebox and Nero or Adeptec Easy CD creator 4.0 to do my burning.

Both Nero and Adeptec burn the cd text and Music Match displays the name of the song as it was entered on the HD from which it was copied, I am talking here about the transfer of old audio cassettes to HD to CD-R.

Musicmatch displays the following:

1. Summer in Italy. By New artist
2. Winter in Italy. By New artist.

Songs I burned were copied from old audio cassettes, is it possible somehow, to replace the "By new artist with the actual name of the artist. The songs are on my HD in MP3 format.

Do you know of a software program that will allow me do do this ??

Not familiar with MusicMatch but I assume you want a mp3 tag editor to edit the embedded tag fields in the mp3 (title, artist , album etc)

Never would have found it myself, since I never heard of an MP3 tag editor. But it sounds as though that is what I am looking for.

This is absolutely amazing, I had some 1999 recordings of Dutch music, don't even know where I got them from, and the darn tag even has a picture of the CD cover inside of it, not to mention all the other info present. Artist, date of recording etc.
Unbelievable, that this has been around for so long without it being generally known. At least a never heard of a MP3 tag before !
