Window ME Components Missing

I am sitting with another headache with Windows ME is that when I go to Add Remove and click on Windows setup I get a blank window and when I close it the following message appears.

Rundll32.
An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway click Ignore and save work to a new file. To Quit this program click Close. you will lose information you entered since last save.

If I click Ignore nothing happens but when I click Close the following message appears.

Rundll32 has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL.
Rundll will now close.

Please can anybody shed some light as to this problem as I do not fancy a re-install.

Use System Restore to roll your computer back to a date to before when your computer worked right. Before the error(s) started occuring.

To start System Restore, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. Or, in the Help and Support main screen, click Use System Restore under Fix a problem.

I thank you for your reply but unfortunately:mad: system restore was disabled due to finding a Backdoor Netdevil virus in the restore files.

After removing this nuisance and cleaning up my system the problem started I think that files needed to run this function might have been deleted.:confused

If only I knew which ones so that they could be re-installed.

Although I've never tried it, you could back up all your sensitive data then insert the WinMe install CD in the drive and close the door, and try to re-install WinMe that way.

A backing up of sensitive data to removable media, format then clean install of Windows with the modem drivers at hand is another option. Be sure and shut your computer down for a full 60 seconds before the format to clear the memory of any trace virus'.

To start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in Safe mode, you can temporarily change the Windows shell from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe:
Start your computer by using the Windows Me Startup disk.
At the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot.
At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini, and then press ENTER.
Edit the shell= line so that it looks like this:
shell=progman.exe
Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini file.
Press ALT+F, and then press X.
Remove your Windows Me Startup disk, and then restart your computer. When your computer restarts, Program Manager should start. If Program Manager does not start, repeat steps 1-7, being careful to follow these steps exactly, and then continue to the next step.
On the File menu, click Run, type msconfig in the Command Line box, and then press ENTER.
Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state.
NOTE: After you configure your computer to start Program Manager, you can start the System Restore tool by typing c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then pressing ENTER.

Just to let all who assisted me with my problem is that it has now been solved my pc was missing a couple of lines in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Setup\VarLDID.
