Floppy drive problem
Hi guys,
I am having a problem with my floppy drive. Everytime I put a diskette in, the drive won't read it and the message will show like this "The disk in drive A is not formatted". I have tried different disk but the problem is still the same. Tried the disks in different comp and they just worked fine.
However, when I put in a windows startup disk, the drive will read it. I've tried to unplug the cable and reinsert it again but nothing happened. Also tried using the drive cleaner but still can't solve the problem.:|
Any ideas?? Thanks. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

what os are you using if windows 98 and you are trying to format them, make sure you have selcted correct capacity.
or see if you can read them from dos prompt or restart in dos and see if you can read them.
then post back what ever happens.

maybe it needs a new battery

Try taking a blank floppy and formatting it in the drive. See if it will do it, without error. if you get an error let us know what it is.

It works after I put a blank disk and reformatting it in the drive. The drive simply read it. But still seems strange for me because the first time I bought the comp, the floppy drive just worked fine and read everytime I put a disk in.
One more thing, when I turn the comp, sometimes it won't detect the drive and gives the message "Floppy(40) drive error".
Do you guys think that the battery is the problem?

Humm. Given that the error at power on is not consistant and you can use the drive (sort of), then its not the cable orientation. And assuming the connections are firm at both the motherboard and drive, it could be a damaged cable. Try another. Also, if your cable has multiple connectors (other than that going to the motherboard), check this page in relation to the connector your drive is using to make sure it is correct.

i had the Floppy(40) drive error 2 weeks ago too .
doesnt anyone know what that is?
i think its your battery- or are you useing an ide/floppy card as opposed to plugging into the board?

Usually indicates a bad cable orientation, but as DrMDJ indicated, that seems to have been eliminated. Suspect a bad cable next, then perhaps a bent/broken pin---or the power connection to the floppy is screwed up. Lastly, it could be something on the mobo floppy connection gone bad or the floppy drive itself is giving up the ghost.
