I just got a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" for my wife, for Mother's Day, and I wanted to get the wifi connection resolved before giving it to her, so that it's ready-to-use.

When the "wireless screen" comes up, it displays several wifi choices. I'm very good with PC hardware, but not with networking/wireless stuff.

1.) How do I know which wifi choice belongs to our router, and
2.) What are the other wifi choices that are appearing? Is the Kindle "homing in" on neighbors' wifi signals?

Let me know what other info is needed to help with this, I'll be glad to post it if I can.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Friends,

I am a newbie & posting here for the first time. I have a problem with a simple workgroup of 7 computers in a machine shop I was brought in to help with - all running Windows XP Pro with SP3 & all updates. The main computer that runs as a server ( contains data & file sharing ) has Windows XP Professional as well. They are all wired to each other with a simple Gigabit switch. A few days ago there was a power failure. The whole network went down. When the power came back, all the computers would reconnect to the server except one that would not see the server at all. I disconnected the mapped drive and tried to reconnect, but it would always give me the login prompt. After the entered the username & password, the server was still not visible. I checked all the connections physically. In fact, the problematic computer would connect to Internet just fine, but not the server. I have disabled the antivirus & windows firewall on the server as well as the client machine in question, still no go. I changed the workgroup name on the client and changed it back to the original name. Rebooted the server the client. That didn't help.

Then, I reset the TCP/IP stack & Winsock & rebooted the machine in question. After this procedure, I was able map the client machine to the server - not by browsing BUT ONLY MANUALLY. However, every time the computer is turned off and turned back on by the user, it would not stay connected to the network drive & still prompt for username & password and I would have to go through mapping the drive manually all over again.

My question is why is this happening? How can I keep the client machine connected to the server all the time, without having to remap & reconnect every time the user reboots the computer when he/she comes back to work in the morning? Any remedies? I would highly appreciate the help. :- )

Just for the record, all the computers have one profile ( - and they're all admin accounts ) and have passwords in them. If i missed anything, please let me know. Thanks a bunch! :- )

I just brought up another PC to working status, except for its network/Internet connection.

System overview:
AMD processor (late 4-core)
4GB RAM
Windows XP Pro SP3

Symptoms:

Everything with the PC in question -- besides the wireless network (Internet) connection -- seems to be working fine.

The NIC driver loaded with no problems, and the Device Manager shows the NIC is working fine.

When I bring up the Network Connections window via the Start menu, it alternates between saying the connection is working fine and that the signal strength is "excellent", and then suddenly I get a red "X" and it says there is no connection at all. It alternates between working and non-working about every 10-12 seconds.

Two other PCs are connected with CAT-5 cable to the same router and keep stable connections that work fine.

The PC in question is very close to the wired+wireless router, so I believe that the report of the signal strength being "excellent" is accurate.

I have on many occasions had network connections (non-connections?) that were totally dead, but why in this situation does it alternate regularly between working and non-working?

As a last comment, this PC was from a relative's home, where the wireless NIC worked fine and the wireless connection was fine and stable. Nothing happened in transport of the PC that could have caused damage, so I cannot imagine that the NIC is suddenly 'broken'.

If I've forgotten any other category of important info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
