WAP question

Can a WAP be connected without the cable to the router? I want to expand the range of my wireless home network and thought this was the way to do it.

I forgot to mention that I already have a router/gateway hooked to my cable modem, but wanted to expand the 802.11b network without the cable from the access point to the wireless gateway/router.
