Just installed a D-Link DFE-530tx+ on one of the computers here, ran a crossover cable (brown-brown, wht brown-wht brown, green-orange, wht blue-wht blue, blue-blue, wht green-wht brown, orange-green, wht orange-wht green) and nothing. By the way, the light on the new card does not come on. Neither does the one in this computer come on. Why would the light not come on? Installed drivers and all. Did everything like I do at work, and nothing. I did the wizard and all, of course, not like at work, mind you, but the lights are bugging me. What do I do? I have a hub that runs 10 mbs, but want the 100 that a xover gives. But without the lights, I figure the hub won't matter....

Wait a minute, there was a cord in the box, and there was no mention in the documentation saying that the cord should go anywhere. Could this be the problem? If so, where in tarnation do I put the wire once it is connected to the card?

The cable you are referring to is probably the Wake-On-Lan cable. If so you don't need to worry about it isn't the cause of your problem(s).

I believe that Nic has 3 LEDs, and that the one labeled Link/Act should be lit if the card is properly inserted and getting power (even with no ethernet cable attached). But to confirm the basics of the card being installed properly you can take a straight-through cable and hook it up to your hub. If you still don't get any lights (on the card) then you've got a problem with the card itself or the way it's physically installed.

Make sure the card is inserted properly in its PCI slot. Also, if you look on your driver diskette, somewhere there should/might be an exe (or com) file called DIAG. You can use it from a DOS prompt to check the basic working of the card (without it being connected to anything else). It will at least test to see if the card can be recognized and communicated with at the most basic level.

I'm sorry, yes the diagnostics show the card functioning properly. Now, should not the computer I am on show on network places when I open it at least?

If the netword protocols (tcpip and/or netbeiu) are installed and configured right, the file and print sharing service (for ms networks) is installed and enabled, you have Client for MS Networks installed and set as the primary logon, and you are sharing at least one file/folder/printer, then yes, you're machine chould show up in network places. This would apply to Win9x/ME, with Win2k/NT/XP being only slightly different (not sure what you have).

Just having the card and its drivers installed without the rest won't cause it to show up in network places/neighborhood.

I bit the bullet and gave up on crossover and connected the 10 mbps hub. Turned out that the rj45s were the problem, and I really don't feel like going to all the hassle of messing with them again, so until I get a fast ethernet hub, I am sticking with what I have. Plenty fast enough for what I am doing for now. Thanks for the tips.

OH, AND BY THE WAY, one of the main reasons for doing all of this was to get internet connection sharing. Guess what? Unless you have a separate account, you cannot log on aol with another computer using it. Of course I know that I can not log on from a remote location if my wife is online and use one of our account screen names, but I thought it may be different networked. Also, if I have ICS set up, the connection, even though I am only connected with one of the computers mind you, is half as fast as if it is not set up. I could not come to this site a little while ago, so I killed ICS on both computers, and here I am, pages jumping up as fast as before. (which is purty dadgume fast for dial up networking, tweaks and all...) I guess I will have to wait until we can afford cable. (the wife is putting in a application for comcast and they give their employees free digital access, maybe I won't have to wait?)
