Firewire file transfer??

I have a sony laptop that came without a floppy drive, plus a CD (w/o the recording feature). There is no networking capabilities installed. It does, however, have a firewire hookup. I'm wondering if it is possible to transfer files back and forth to my desktop (also equiped with firewire port) using this cable. Does this require any special software?
