Hello,
I am going to be networking a Pentium machine w/Win95 to a Pentium III w/Win98 and I want to share the printer that is hooked up to the Win98 machine. I would also like to share the modem.
What do I have to do to share the printer? What do I have to do to share the modem? Also, will you be able to see the files on the Win98 machine from the Win95 machine?

How about just an answer on: Will the Win95 machine be able to see the files on the Win98 machine?
Thanks

While setting up the network, add the File & Printer sharing support.
What do I have to do to share the printer?
Open Start - Settings - Printers. Right click on the printer you want to share, choose Sharing from the menu. Choose to Share the printer, put in any name you want - short names are good.
Install the printer drivers on the Win95 system - I'd install them as if the printer were attached to LPT1. After the install, check the printer properties, choose to add a port - network, and choose the shared printer. Tell the printer to print to the shared port.
What do I have to do to share the modem?
If the Win98 system is running Win98 Second Edition, try to set up Internet Connection Sharing. Sometimes it works.
If you can't get Windows ICS to work or you don't have Win98SE installed, try one of the third party ICS solutions such as Wingate or Sygate.
Also, will you be able to see the files on the Win98 machine from the Win95 machine?
Yep, as long as the network is working correctly and both systems are turned on http://discussions.virtualdr.com/wink.gif

Thanks for that info Cliffh. Very helpful. I have set the printer up just how you said. It is mapped to \\marie\hp 710c. It is shared so I can see it from the other machine "peter". The printer works fine when just printing on "marie". But when I try to print from "peter" I get an error message that says "Lost Communication With The Printer". When I click on the troubleshooting box it says to turn the printer on while Win98 is coming up. I have done that. Still doesn't work. Do I have to have a Subnet Mask and IP address setup on these machines? If so, where do I do that? Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks to all who respond.

Install the printer driver locally on peter if not already done. Then on the Details tab of the Printer Properties, click the Capture Printer Port button. In the Device box, click the port you want to capture (LPT2 for example). In the Path box, enter the path for the network printer you want to use. Use the syntax \\marie\hp710c for the network printer path (you may want to re-share the printer without using a space).

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your help so far. I still can't get the printer to work. I have captured LPT:1 on Peter and sent it to Marie. The syntax in the "printers properties" sheet, in the "Print to the following port" text box looks like this...
LPT1: (\\Marie\hp 710c)
Is that right? Or should it simply read \\Marie\hp 710c. hp 710c being the share name for the printer. I keep getting the error message "Lost communication to the printer".
Both systems have Win98 on them now. I thought that might make things easier. Boy was I wrong! Any more suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

I got it!!! I just went to the end capture button on the details tab of the printer properties sheet. Ended the capture and then recaptured the port LPT:1 (\\Marie\HP 710C).
Now it works. Thanks for your help.
