1 cable modem, 1 hub, 2 NIC's

Hi,

I'm cheap. I have a Shaw cable-modem, and a hub, and 2 computers connected and working through it. I would like to be able to network these computers to one another without actually having to purchase another network card. Is this is simple as they should be able to see one another over the Shaw network? Or is it possible? Any help would be much appreciated.

Absolutely - there is no reason whatsoever to install a 2nd NIC. Just install a 2nd protocol, say netbeui, and there you go. Use the @home workgroup name and computer names already assigned. You can install file & printer sharing but make sure you ONLY BIND IT TO NETBEUI, NOT TCP/IP. It is very simple to network your computers with a hub, if you have any questions or problems, please post again.

If the PC's are already networked together but your just lacking the sharing of the internet go to the link below and try there program... It;s what I use on my network at home.

but like ul2m8Barbie says a small 4-5port HUB would make things easier but not required.

Thanks for your help and advice guys, I did it last night and it's working fine. Can't believe it's so easy.
Just one question: Are there any additional security concerns in hooking up a couple of computers this way? I don't really have the expertise to set up a firewall...what sort of security precautions would I be best advised to take with this sort of setup?

The biggest issue would be binding file and printer sharing to your DSL-sharing protocol - so make sure it's only bound to your local home lan protocol - netbeui or whatever. If a hacker wants in your computer, they'll get in. If you password files/directories and make access logins/passwords, you should have enough security for basic online browsing/game-playing, etc.

Alright, I've got the hub, three computers configured peer-to-peer and just got DSL modem.(not connected yet) Can anyone give me instructions on the ORDER of connecting?
i.e. Is it necessary to uninstall, then reinstall my network configs. before the DSL software?

Should the modem be directly connected to any one of the hub ports?

Do I need software such as Proxy(Analogx)?
