Network help with home, 2 computers, cable modem

I am hooking up 2 computers, one with ME and one with 98. ME has 3Com network card and 98 has Everywhere fast ethernet adapter. I am using a hub by EtherEZ Hub and cable modem. I have tried everthing to get connected including home networking on ME. I get green light from cables to hub. I have even tried to give 98 2 TCP/IP addresses in registry. I still don't have a network. Help.

A hub by itself will not permit ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) with only one IP.
Do you have more than one IP from your ISP?
IF not, you will have to decide on which method you will use to implement ICS.

You have to define and log on to users in the same domain/workgroup on both machines.

As for sharing internet conn. you can do that "the windows way" (builtin function in windows) or you can invest in a router, connect it to the hub and let that handle the sharing for you.

Here's what worked for our home network:

2 NIC's (can't remember the brands)
SMC 4-port hub
Motorola(?) SurfBoard cable modem

NIC's connect to ports 1 and 2, and the cable modem connects to the uplink port on the hub. The computers are both running WinME and use the same workgroup. Both have continuous Internet access, and can send files etc. between the two. Both run ZoneAlarm and InoculateIT, since there's no physical firewall.

Go to www.nexland.com, (http://www.nexland.com,) they sell internet box for low cost and you can connect up to 4 computers on to the modem connection. I work with it and don't have any problems.

If you decide to stick with the hub and use ICS (I have discovered analogX Proxy recently, and like it even better) you will need 2 NICs in your internet host computer. One will go to the internet and one will connect to the hub. The NIC in the other computer will also go to the hub.
