Okay, here's the deal. I have 2 Win98se PC's at home. They're networked together through a hub. I use TCP/IP on both PC's. I can browse the PC's through network neighborhood no problem, both PC's seeing each other.

The main PC is setup to share a DSL connection. I set it up using ICS and it worked great for about a week. Now all of a sudden I can't ping the ICS host PC from the client PC. The host can ping the client, but not vice versa, either by IP or hostname. Nothing has been done in the settings. I double checked them to make sure.

On the client PC I removed all networking components, rebooted and reinstalled them. After rebooting again the client PC comes up with an assigned IP address correctly setup and in the correct range (the host is 192.168.0.1 and the client is 192.168.0.2 and the client's gateway and DNS server is set to the host computer's IP address as ICS set it up that way). The node type is Broadcast and I can release and renew my IP on the client with no problems. I just can't ping the host or any IP or hostname out on the Internet. What's weird is that I can browse the host computer's hard drive through network neighborhood.

I'm totally lost. The hardware all seems to be good and the software all seems to be setup right. Any help would be great.

If you have NetBEUI installed, then it's not surprising that you can still browse the network.

Have you installed any Firewall software?

no other protocol's installed but tcp/ip. weird, eh?

i am using sygate's personal firewall. it worked fine with it from the start.

everything was working fine. both pc's were connecting to each other and the internet. now, somehow, the client can't ping anything.

Can you browse the web from the client? or is it just that you can't ping? Could the firewall be blocking ICMP packets?
