Any suggestions. I'm assuming a modem dial-up... boyblue May 5th, 2000, 02:54 AM As far as I know you just have to start RAS (Remote Access Server) and give individual users RAS permission. The computer calling in need a DUN (Dial Up Networking) configured to dial your modem, and they need (assumming Windows) Microsoft client and TCP/IP installed. duck hook May 8th, 2000, 05:27 PM Thanks so far boyblue! What exactly is RAS: hardware? software? included in Windows 9x? a generic term for any PC allowing remote access? Is some RAS software better than others? MarkhP May 9th, 2000, 08:29 AM (Dont mean to butt in here...) RAS is the Remote Access Service available on WindowsNT Server. Updated with RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Service) which is downloadable from those lovely chaps at MSoft http://discussions.virtualdr.com/rolleyes.gif . If you have an NT Server connected to your Novell LAN you could use this to connect to it. If the NT Server has shares/drive mappings pointing to the Netware Server, your users could then see these also (given correct rights etc). Have a look on support.microsoft.com for PPTP and RRAS for more info. (this is only 'cheap' if you have NT server already of course) boyblue May 9th, 2000, 03:57 PM As you have probably figured out by now, RAS is software and comes with WinNT. Since this is a very common need, I would assume that Netware would have an equivalent. I was under the impression that there was a similar function available in Win98, but I don't think it is called RAS. I know there is some modem connection sharing software bundled with Win98 that may have RAS functions. I don't have a lot of experience with Win98 so I can't give you any details. boyblue May 9th, 2000, 04:22 PM I just did a quick search of the Microsoft Support Database. If you have the Microsoft Winodws PLUS software pack, it has a Dail-Up Networking SERVER that will manage RAS functions. This software is also avaiable in the Windows Resource Kit which I think is a book and CD that you can find in most bookstores. Windows Resouce Kits can also be downloaded from Microsoft. Here are some references from the seach for "dail-up networking server". http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/win95/technote/remote.asp http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/InProductHelp98/rna_dnu_server.asp http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/6/54.ASP duck hook May 9th, 2000, 05:08 PM Good show and thanks for the links. http://discussions.virtualdr.com/smile.gif boyblue May 10th, 2000, 05:59 PM Novell provides RAS services through a product called NetWare Connect 2.0 Services. Novell also has provisions for RAS through VPN (Virtual Private Network) A couple of links to Novell- h ttp://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl?database_name=kb&type=HTML&docid=%03%25F59117%3a957996181%3a%20%28%20remote%20access%20%29%20%20%07%01%00&byte_count=36530 (http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl?database_name=kb&type=HTML&docid=%03%25F59117%3a957996181%3a%20%28%20remote%20access%20%29%20%20%07%01%00&byte_count=36530) http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/bmee3.5/docui/index.html#../vpncfenu/data /hyp2z4zs.html (http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/bmee3.5/docui/index.html#../vpncfenu/data/hyp2z4zs.html) A search of Novells Knowledgebase for 'Remote Access' turned up several documents.
