Q about Protocols????

What protocol does a nullmodem use in a direct connection bitween two computers?
and what does it requre to use two modems (in a intern teleline) to have a network?

Back in the c64 days we used to connect two pc's whith a phone cord with modems. and since they were not connected to any telco lines we had to force them to go off hook and then they would connect, havent tried it with the ibm pc
