I have a mixture of 95/98 computers in a lab that is networked to a NT server (SP5). When I log on, all map drives are logged onto, but when a student logs on sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have the same protocols on all machines as far as I can tell, but I still get problems. I have not experienced this problem before in another lab with w95 computers. Any suggestions?

First verify how people are logging in. Are they actually entering a password for a valid NT user or bypassing the W9x logon by hitting ESC or cancel?
Also, check your properties for Client for Microsoft Networking. Are the following enabled?
Logon to Windows NT domain
logon and restore network connections

Also is the correct domain name specified?

The students are not logging in right now since I have had problems getting it to work. I have three students login names and passwords and have been trying to remedy the problem. Yes NT networking is selected and restoration of network connections is checked. All computers have the same domain name with the proper case. Again, sometimes it will work, most notably right after I log in. However, the problem arises after a few more attempts. It is intermittent. I have tried several configurations with the protocols...no netbeui, only ipx/spx along with TCP/IP...no netbeui nor ipx/spx, just TCP and the result is the same.
Is there something at the server level I may have wrong? Like mentioned before, I have another lab that is working fine.

Thanks

This is from another post but you might try this to see if it will help. I found that win98 needs to match up with the IRQ numbers of the other net cards in the networked system or come close in number in order for it to work. I use IRQ 10 or 11 for the net cards. These can often be used by the modem card or perhaps the sound card. Check Start\settings\control panel\system\device manager and look at the resources of each card. Win98 does not easily allow you to change the IRQ so you need to yank out the conflicting card (modem or sound), start up and let plug and play detect the net card, check that the IRQ is close in number to those installed on other machines, and then reinstall the removed card(s). Check for conflicts between the modem and sound card IRQ's to preempt a new problem. This worked for me after experimenting for some time but all 10 machines work now.
