WinVNC is used to connect to a remote PC. The VNC client must be installed and running on the remote PC. With Win 2k the service must be started. You can then connect to the PC Via IP address and log in. WinVNC will connect through a browser and give you full access to the client PC.

There's not a whole lot to it - install it on the machines, run the viewer on one and connect to the server running on the other. Once you have that working, then start with the fancy stuff like viewing through a browser, downloading Tight VNC (http://www.tightvnc.com) and copying the files over the original VNC files for a noticeable speed boost etc. Equalizer's link pretty much has all the fine tweaking details. We use it heaps at work - it cuts down problem solving times dramatically when you can see what the other machine is doing, even if it is only over a dialup or ISDN connection. Cuts down on the junkets to fix the server in New Zealand though. http://discussions.virtualdr.com/frown.gif

Thanks for the help. Is there a way to delete the icon from the system tray. I looked at some of the documentation on the website but I cannot find the registry settings that it is talking about.

Right click on VNC icon in the system tray and click on close VNC. If you want to disable WinVNC from loading up on start up, run msconfig and uncheck WinVNC under Startup.

What I want to do is keep the service running but not display the icon in the sys tray. It is a Windows 2000 machine. Any ideas?

No. Not without changing and recompiling the source code. We feel that there would be few legitimate uses of VNC where you would need to conceal its operation. However, there might be occasions where you would not want the user of the server machine to be able to adjust the WinVNC settings, password, etc, so versions later than 3.3.2R3 include a 'restricted' mode where the icon is still visible, but the menu options normally available from it will be disabled.
