Advice Please: MS Works vs. MS Word

Hi,
I have MS Works 2000 preinstalled on my computer. My daughter just started college and a number of people have told her Word is very good for reports, etc. I told her I think Works does the same thing. So my question is: would it be to her advantage to purchase and install Word rather than just use Works? i.e., is Word easier and better to use?

There would be no conflict with having both programs on the computer.

As to which is better, the following is just my opinion and some impressions.

Word will be a more mainstream program, and therefore might be better to learn and become proficient on. Most professional organizations I believe, use Word, whereas Works is more tailored for home use.

Works is basically a cut-down all-in one package. It has a simpler word processor than Word, a simpler spreadsheet than Excel and a basic flat database compared to Access's RDBMS. It's been absolutely ages since I used Works (think Windows 3.x) so I can't do a feature comparison, but Works is probably fine for simple reports. The sorts of things that I imagine off hand Word would do that Works might not include automatic Table Of Contents generation, mail merges etc.

Works is simpler to use and will probably do everything your daughter will need for college.

On the other hand, Word has value on a resume. It is used by most (90%?) businesses. The exception being law offices which generally use WordPerfect.
