I have an HP Pavillion 6635e with and Intel Celeron running at 500Mhz and 128 MRAM. OS is Windows 98, second ed. Bios is by American Megatrend Ver. 3.0, 1-26-01 and the modem is a MEssenger 56SoftK.
The system has been working well in all respects, except when I go on-line it randomly takes a 45 second nap: no buttons work and no modem activity takes place.
I contacted HP, who had me check for a delay statement in MSCONFIG...wasn't there. I also disabled their DiskMngr98 which is supposed to perform certain maintenances in the background.
I also checked the Advanced set-up in IE 5.02 properties and didn't find anything abnormal. Also, nothing noticeable in modem set-up or performance check in Control Panel.

Anybody got any ideas?

A Few
Assuming you already have IE's autoupdate feature disabled then:

If you have a NIC (http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#connection_freeze)

Other Options (http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers3.htm#freezing)

If these solutions do not help then I would be inclined to suspect my AV and\or firewall settings next. There are still more possibilities such as DL managers, pop-up killers, etc, but I haven't a clue what is installed on your system http://discussions.virtualdr.com/smile.gif
