Repairing IE 5.5 to make browsing quicker

I got a good tip from a post here to go into add/remove programs, click on IE 5.5 and click on the radio button that repairs IE. I was told this b/c my browsing on the net was slower than normal. Low and behold it worked. After a couple of days though it went right back to the same problem.

My question is this. What repairs are done to IE 5.5 that make my browsing faster, and how can I keep these changes constant? Also is 6.0 better, or is it wise to just stay with 5.5?

The repairing doesn't actually make the browser faster. When IE repairs itself, it runs a scan on all the IE files on your computer and if any are missing, corrupted, or the wrong version it'll fix it. This way, IE works the way its supposed to. It doesn't do anything else.

So, its possible you have installed another application that replaced one of IE's files with the wrong version and that's why the repair option fixed it. Anything internet related can cause this problem, such as email, chat, ftp programs or anything like download accelerators or firewalls programs.

If you did install something like this, its best to uninstall it, run the repair, and don't install anything for a while to see if the problem goes away.

Actually I never installed a thing to my IE. I have had 5.5 since I bought this computer, and have not changed a thing.

What radio button that repairs IE? Does it exist for IE 6.0.26? I've had lots of problems with it - I think I zapped some of its files when I had to clean up a virus. It sure need some repairs!

lauzy--Re Repair IE.
Control Panel|Add/Remove programs|scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer|highlight|click Add/Remove. In the next window one option should be Repair Internet Explorer. Check the box and click OK.

kostnkost--Do you clean out your Temporary Internet Files from time to time (like once a week)? That should speed up your browser performance?

Hi kostnkost,

Along with cleaning out Temporary Internet Files from time to time, I run Adaware 5.62 (http://tomcoyote.com/lsindex.html) once a week to keep the adware and spyware cleaned out, but like a virus program you have to keep the ref files updated.

I appreciate everyones responses to my topic. I regularly clean my internet files, and I do run adaware every week. I have yet to download 6.0, but have found a very good site for speed tweaks and such. It's called Speedguide.net, and it has done wonders for my computer.
