Hello Goldust,
I appreciate your post regarding this new term.
Personnally, I treat all free downloads as merely being another BETA.
BETAs, as we all should know by now, are ideas that have attained a certain level of ability. There is no committment on the part of the author to show any responsibility for his efforts, and in the meantime, will learn from user feedback how to make the program even more appealing.
Even though there are useful free downloads available, I never forget that I have done quite well before these fantastic new abilities became available. As has been evidenced in the past, even software from the major software suppliers can still be full of "bugs".
Be sure to save a backup copy of the registry before installing any new program, or use a program that is well proven in its ability to recover from a program install that only leads to problems. One ounce of trouble and the program is wiped clean from my computer, and the registry is then restored with my backup copy. Usually that is all that is necessary, unless the D drive now appears in the Application Data folder (happens).
All downloads are designed to attract the attention of Web users with eventual intentions of placing a fee on it whenever the services it provides are found to be high in demand. Unfortunately, the only guarantee is usually just a return of the purchase price, and no reimbursement for the time and effort it took to bring the computer back to normal.

Oldhermit...interesting reading! You've made me see things from a differnet angle....
From the link I posted, the thing that bugged me the most was the fact that not all of the programs that relate to drugware are BETA programs. Some are well-established programs or sites and once they have enough users/members in their grasp, the companies will just suddenly start to charge a fee.
Good examples of drugware that I've noticed recently are some of the "free" storage space providers (ie. sites that offer free on-line storage for your files). I've seen two that have turned round and have begun to charge their users...many members have plain left and found alternatives....some who desperatley need the service stick to it and pay the fees http://discussions.virtualdr.com/frown.gif
It's apalling what they do, but we can always shun the companies that do it diabolically by not buying their products or using their services! Some may say that it is easier said than done, coz once you're hooked on a program....!
Misery: Hows it going mate?
You betchya we'll see more of these *ware programs and the terms will just keep on rolling out. I just hope it doesn't get too OTT!
Had a lovely time in Goa, thanx! Wather was gorgeous and the beaches just wonderful! Going back again in January! http://discussions.virtualdr.com/biggrin.gif

Good idea to revive this archived post on occasion, for anyone not sure if the program they want to download is spyware. I have bookmarked it so the list can be reviewed before any download.
These are the programs you do not want to download, as provided by Sting and other members:
