I suddenly cannot connect to the internet. I did not make any changes in the last 3 days and it was working fine. I have cable modem and contacted my carrier. They said that while my PC is booting up, they can ping it a couple of times, but as soon as Windows 98 loads, they cannot ping it anymore. So it sounds like software to me. I have tried removing and reinstalling TCP/IP with no luck. I can ping 127.0.0.1, but nothing else (I have been trying Yahoo). Last week I did install NetZero because I needed a tempory dial up connection, but my internet was working since then and have removed it.
TIA

Did it start right after you removed it? Check your connection for a proxy, remove the dialup connection you used.

Hello, No it did not work after I removed net zero.
I do not have any proxy. I connect by cable modem, not dial up. Do you have any other ideas?

Try removing everything from Control Panel|Network, then reboot and add all the components back again.

You might also try reinstalling the drivers for your network card. To do that, go to Control Panel|Device Manager, select your NIC and click Properties, then go to the Driver tab and click Update Driver. Then tell Windows to browse to the NIC's driver disk or location of the downloaded drivers.

I totally removed network neighborhood and reinstalled, making sure to use the latest driver for my ethernet card. No luck. Then I booted to DOS and loaded old registry files (system.dat & user.dat) from a backup. Then I could access the internet. My registry must be corrupted. Now my registry does not match the programs I have loaded (it was 3 months old) Do you know of anything that can compare registry files so I can fix the one that doesn't work? If not, I will restore both the Program Files and Windows directories from the backup.

Thanks for your responses.
