Not able to access www.microsoft.com since the beginning of the year.

I wonder if anyone would have any info about me not able to gain access to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) site since the beginning of this year. It is as though Microsoft is blocking some access routes (I tried it using PacBell.net, Netzero.com, Blulight.com and SBC DSL service) without admitting it.

Thanks guys. www.anonymizer.com (http://www.anonymizer.com) and 207.46.230.229 help but I can only access the initial page. I still can not access most of the links through the initial page. Especially those that provide critical info. I do not what Microsoft is really doing.

Check the HOSTS file in your Windows directory and delete any entry for www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) if it exists.

Can you let me know the exact name of this HOST file that you had mentioned. Windows folder has a lot of subfolders. Where it is hiding? I use W98 with IE5.5.
I appreciate it if you can provide further info to me.

I think this is where tuttle is meaning.

The file path should be:

c:/windows/HOSTS

It's not in windows sub-folders.

You can open the file with notepad. Once open you will want to remove the microsoft entries. Then save.

What kind of messages are you getting when try to access the pages?

On the IE menu goto Tools>Internet Options>Security. Click on Internet then Default Level then Apply. If the links still do not function correctly, the JavaScript engine may not be installed properly on your computer.

maxximilian has the right path, but I should probably have mentioned that file is optional - if it doesn't exist, it's not causing the problem.

OK...Tuttle just reminded me of something. I created my HOSTS file myself. I didn't have one until this. Just the HOSTS.sam (sample).

If you don't have a HOSTS file then it is possible that whatever DNServer you are using is having a major hiccup in resolving the IP address for microsoft. Other than that, I don't know...

try this. go to www.anonymizer.com (http://www.anonymizer.com) and using that site go to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com)
www.anonymizer.com (http://www.anonymizer.com) is a proxy server.

I guess I learn it in the hard that a lot of the ISPs have problem with DNS services (outdated database). The four ISPs that I have been using do have problems linking me to www.microsoft.com. (http://www.microsoft.com.) Now I have to first link to www.anonymizer.com (http://www.anonymizer.com) first before I can access MS site. Anonymizer seems to be a good ISP.
