I,m having big problems connecting a 486\Win 3.11 to the Internet for an elderly friend. I got the modem working ok and can connect to the service provider, using Trumpet Winsock. But I can't get any further, browsers don't seem able to recognise the connection. All I want to do is get mail - any ideas would be welcome.

Hi porty - Welcome to the VirtualDr Forum. I have posted a link that might help you find a browser. If they will work in 3.1, they should have no problem in 3.11. Incidentally, dont bother trying to access the microsoft site, its seems that they have deleted all links to software downloads for 3.11. Good luck. Windows 3.1 FAQ (http://www.logicalsky.com/Windows31_FAQ.htm)
I had better modify my statement about microsoft - most links to downloads - there are still a few in their library.

Had a quick flick through the links provided - couldnt find Netscape 4.08 either but found Opera - no java though -> Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/download.cgi?id=28)

porty - Does your ISP allow access via PPP? If so, once you connect, what do you see in the Trumpet Winsock window? Did you try pressing [Enter] a couple of times? Did it then prompt you for a username and password? If so, and you start to see seemingly random characters as the server begins the PPP negotiation process, press the [Esc] key immediately to allow Trumpet to complete the negotiation. If you get a prompt, type set port ppp enable and press [Enter]. Either way, as soon as you see "PPP ENABLED" and "My IP address = <address>" you're in. Minimize Trumpet Winsock and load your browser (or whatever).

AnnMarie - The Enblish version of Netscape 4.08 for Windows 3.1 can be found here:

ftp://archive.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.08/english/windows/windows3.1/

Click the Up to higher level directory links to get to other versions. Netscape's main Archive site is here:

ftp://archive.netscape.com/pub/

Everything from version 2.01 through 6.xx, (for a variety of platforms), should be listed in one of the subdirectories somewhere.

Microsoft's Windows 3.1 Update page is here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/win31/default.asp

You can also browse through their FTP site starting here:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/

(Note: "peropsys" means "Personal Operating System" and "softlib" means "Software Library". Once you're into a directory that contains a mess of files, click the "index.txt link to view a brief description of each file.)

Thanks for the links Vernon. I obviously didnt look hard enough for Netscape 4.08 - it was there alright. Still couldnt find a version of Internet Explorer that will work in 3.1 though. The FTP site had a reference to IE 3 but couldnt find the file in the folder (getting tired tho - could have missed it). I had found a link earlier to IE in all downloads for 3.1 but when I clicked on it - got 404 page not found.
