MS-DOS Boot Partition

I wiped out my hard drive. When I try to intall Win95 it tells my that I need to create a MS-DOS Boot Partition. I used FDISK to create a primary partition. After I created the partition, it still said I needed a MS-DOS Boot Partition. How do I create one, or what can I do to intall Win95?

What did you have on the hard ddrive previously? Were you running anything like Linux or Unix or NT?
sounds to me like some operating system created a non-dos partitioned hard drive.
If you use fdisk & display the partition what does it say about it?

I got it to work up untill I install Windows http://discussions.virtualdr.com/smile.gif. I can't seem to get my D: Drive (My CD-ROM) to come up so I can install the Win95 CD http://discussions.virtualdr.com/frown.gif. I can do A:, C:, but not D:. Does anyone know how to get the D: to work so I can install from a CD-ROM http://discussions.virtualdr.com/confused.gif?

If this isn't an older proprietary system (i.e. Packard Bell), try using a Win98 boot disk to start the computer. A Win98 boot disk comes with CD-ROM support built onto it and can be used to start a Win95 computer. You can download one here:

Don't use the Win98 boot disk to create a partition for Win3.1 or Win95 and I wouldn't put the Win98 system files on the hard drive (by using either the SYS C: or FORMAT C: /S commands).

I tried using the Win98 disk, but it diddn't help. It can't seem to find my CD-ROM drive. I can't get into the BIOS settings because it doesn't say anything like press del. for setting.

What type of computer do you have? How old is it? What is the size of your hard drive? The fdisk program comes in different versions with different versions of DOS and 95; which version did you partition with? Have you formatted the drive after partitioning it?
Was this drive working before in this machine? Visit support.microsoft.com if you can for complete instructions. Search on Windows 95, installing. You can search this forum for information about entering the BIOS for your type of machine, I think Vernon Frazee had a post about this, listing the keystrokes necessary for a variety of machines; use his name to search.
