I'm posting this for my mom in Ohio. She has a 386 computer that has Word for Windows 3.0 (or 3.1). The brand of the computer is old, a Digital Deck 2, 316 SX. She doesn't know how to use it but would like to get a printer. She's not computer literate and I'm not living around to help her. I'm living in Dubai, UAE and am trying to make it easy for her just to go someplace and buy a printer without getting confused by a salesperson. Can somebody please help. Also, any clues as to where I can get a manual for her to learn Word Version 3.0? I'd appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks

Hello There!
Welcome to Virtual Dr.!
If she is in fact running Windows 3.1, I can tell you that my Canon BJC 2000 (which is a bubble jet printer) has the drivers to load, but they are on a CD. If she does not have a CD, then either she or you can go on the internet (at Cannon's site) and get the drivers on floppy.

My printer cost 49.00. They also make a BJC 1000 which is perfect for very small printing jobs and costs even less...you have to watch your Best Buy store and other store adds to get them on sale!

As far as the manual goes, that will take some work. First try the public library. Check second hand stores like the Salvation Army and Goodwill. If her community has computer swap marts, go there. Or if there are used compter stores, check there. Maybe do a search on the internet for 'computer manuals' and you may find a source there.

Others will have more ideas.
Good Luck, and keep us posted!
Dave (not affiliated with Cannon LOL!)

P.S. After re-reading your post, before your mom goes out for a printer, she should go to her library and get a book on using Windows 3.1 first, and get familiar with using the computer. Also for starters, when you first start Windows 3.1 if you click on 'Help' up on the menu bar of Program Manager, she can click on 'Run Tutorial'. This is a rudamentary lesson on using the mouse and minimizing and maximizing windows. Opening and closing programs etc.
Let's get her walking before she starts running and spending money!!

The great difficulty in buying printers these days is making sure it has drivers for DOS. Check the websites of prospective brands and make sure they are not Windows 95 only. My son has an NEC100 which works for Windows. But it will not work with DOS based programs.
