Thanks. Phil Limerick December 16th, 2000, 08:48 PM Hi Yabon, What sort of backup software was used to create the backup files that you are seeking to restore? If the software was written to run under Win 3.11, I would be surprised if it ran under NT. If you have access to an old "clunker" machine, your best shot may be to install Win 3.11 on it... restore the files... and then take the files to the NT machine via floppy, Zip drive or whatever means are available to you. The backup software used was the one provided with Win 3.11 : MWBackup. I haven't be able till now to find an old machine with Win 3.11. Maybe some day... Thanks anyway. If you have Partition Magic, you could easily carve out another partition to install Win 3.1 into. If you don't have that product, you could use this (http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/) freebie to do so. Thanks. Phil Hello Phil I have got a similar problem with restoring under DOS 5.0 backupped files, first I installed DOS 5.00 on diskettes from which I booted, then I went on restoring to a hdd-partition that was equivalent to the former one, it went quite well till system brokje down at the first corrupt file, thank God it was the 78/95 and not the 1st or 3rd. But another problem had been to formate the old 5,25" disks then, I had got the worst problems, at DOS 5.0 as well as under Windows 98SE, so I came to the conclusion that the oldening process of the matrix must have made the magnetic microcores uncontrollable. Even the good old PC-Diskfix in its last version 9 did solve the problem; so there is only one solution. Throw away the old stuff, and teh old floppies had been so expensive :´-( ------------------ KHLange Eeyore January 6th, 2001, 07:41 PM If you have the Windows 95 Install CD either Upgrade or OEM, the programs are in the OLDMSDOS folder. This can be added to you system and generally used with Windows 95. I don't know if NT has a similar collection of programs. I also thought I saw somewhere that you could download this collection from Microsoft's website. But I have bee unable to find it. See This Microsft article about it (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q138/1/35.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=restoring%20from%20backup&rnk=2&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W95). I got no results for Windows 98 or NT. If you have a system with a fair amount of memory, you can create a Ramdrive (http://www.geocities.com/politalk/rmdrv/dos.htm) and run DOS 6.x from a floppy without affecting the programs on the computer. That way you could restore to a floppy or a DISK (as DOS 6.x cannot access a FAT32 drive if that's how you are set). ------------------ My http://www.geocities.com/politalk/docs/coin.gif Dennis Politalk (http://www.geocities.com/politalk) Vernon Frazee January 7th, 2001, 05:20 AM If you have the Windows 95 Install CD either Upgrade or OEM, the programs are in the OLDMSDOS folder. ... The restore only works for files stored with the DOS 5.0 Backup.exe command. The files you listed was probably what I had seen before. Unfortunately, what Yabon needs probably can't be downloaded from MS. PS: Vernon, notice that the line "MSBACKUP.TXT" shows "CHKSTATE.SYS" for the Long Filename. They must use a different version of Windows over at MS. ------------------ My http://www.geocities.com/politalk/docs/coin.gif Dennis Politalk (http://www.geocities.com/politalk) [This message has been edited by Eeyore (edited 01-07-2001).] Vernon Frazee January 7th, 2001, 07:18 PM Source, Microsoft KB: Commonly Asked Windows 95 Questions and Answers (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q132/7/37.asp) Windows 95 is available on CD-ROM and floppy disks.
