i have an HP computer that has a quantum 6.4 gig hd in it. I did something that toasted the hd my computer would not boot nothing no matter what i tried so Hp sent me a new drive as i was still under warranty..new drive works just fine... Out of curiousity i put the old drive in my 486/66 project computer and got it to boot..but could only fdisk and format to 504 megs because of the bios i suppose... then i put it back in my hp and it it will not boot still but it works in the 486 any ideas????

Did you try AUTO-detect when you put the drive back in from the 486 to the HP, or change the CMOS settings?
Your boot sector must have gotten corrupted when it was in the HP. Then when you ran FDISK and FORMAT in the 486 you were OK, did you try to create extended DOS Partitions on it when it was un the 486? If you can create other partitons the drive is probably OK.
Did you try to FDISK and FORMAT it in the HP?
Or was there a Disk Manager Program on the HP?

Hi!
The 486 will probably not recognize more that 512mb. Use a Disk Manager such as EZ-BIOS (or equivalent for your drive). This should allow you to use up to an 8.4bg drive.

If you are using Windows 95a or less, you will have to partition the drive into at least 3 partitions with none being over 2.1gb.
