I am new user so please bear with me and explain answer simply please. Am running Windows 98, there is DOS Prompt shortcut in Programs menu bar.It opens small DOS window with no problem. However, when I try to exit Windows and restart in DOS Mode I get a bunch of jibberish on screen. There is no blinking cursor so I can't type in anything. I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to get out of it. Also, when I restart and hold down CTRL key before Windows starts I get into DOS without problem and things are fine till I give win command then DOS says Windows is missing Himem.sys, but Himem.sys is there as far as I can see, so I can't start Windows from DOS
but Windows starts everytime I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL or the restart button. Can anyone help? Someone mentioned something to me about echo but I have no idea what that means. Thanks, Dave

I can tell you that ECHO has nothing to do with your problem. Without further details, I will venture to say that you have a problem with the refresh rate or video setup in your PC if you get jibberish and no cursor. In my opinion some of your Windows 98 files maybe missing or corrupted; my first choice would be the MSDOS.SYS file.

For more information on MSDOS.SYS you can visit the Microsoft Tech Support site at http://support.microsoft.com/support/search .

Hope this helps!

When you open a dos window from inside of windows 95 or 98, when you are done what you have to do, just type EXIT and the window will close without causing you any problems. When you byp****the startup files to start the computer in dos mode, the system bypasses those files that windows 98 needs,so when done doing things this way, all you can do is reboot.
