dos and tcp/ip

In our network lab (college) we are running dos crynwr, pk11, smtp,etc.
We can nametoip. Ping, echo, telnetd do not show a connection. The 3com hub shows traffic on the network.
Please direct me to a web site, or explain to me how we can communicate between computers.
