upgrading to windows 95

I have a western systems 486 dx2 16mb ram ,cd rom,and my version of windows 95 wont let me upgrade, is there any way round this,as I believe Ihave the full version and not the upgrade, I have windows 3.11 installed presently.

In order to get Windows 95 full version to install correctly, you have to act as if you have no operating system on your hard drive. Rename the WIN.COM file in your c:\Windows directory to something like WIN.CO1. Then, install Windows 95.

Mind you, this version of W95 will NOT upgrade your version on Windows 3.11. Any application your currently use in 3.11 will have to be re-installed under W95.

In order to have WIN95 run your WIN3.xx installed applications, you need to take one more step, in addition to renaming win.com...
When, during the install, the setup program specifies "WINDOWS.000" as the directory, change it to "WINDOWS\". This should allow you to use any programs previously installed under WIN 3.xx.

The best way to install is by formating the hard drive. If you keep the old windows 3.1x system files it will slow down the system of your Windows 9x. Remember back up your computer. Don't format unless you know how to install install the full version. I have never installed the full version but I imagine it comes with a floppy disk. If so insert it in the drive after your formating is all finished. Then restart and follow the simple directions.
