Accessing NT volume w/ Mac client

I've got an NT 4 volume that MAC clients need to access. The MACs are running System 7 and 8, and I've got Macintosh services loaded on the server. I am also using the Microsoft UAM for the NT authentication.
I can actually get to the volumes, but I can't set the client up to "mount volume at startup". I get an error everytime. Does this error originate because of the client, (I think so), or a misconfiguration on the server.
Also, is there a way to setup some kind of alias on the desktop so the user will not have to go through Chooser, Appleshare, server, blah, blah. Keep in mind that I can't have the password sent in clear text. That is the root of the whole problem.

You're referring specifically to "mount volume at startup" - i think you mean the check box in the chooser mount box ? May be a security issue e.g. passwords etc.

Mount the volume and make an alias of it - unmount the volume et. voila, Desktop alias to the network share (maybe try putting this in ths startup folder instead of the auto-mount). It'll ask 'em to login when they double-click it.

I actually tried that. But, because the Appleshare UAM is the default authorization, when the alias tries to log on, it tries to use the Appleshare UAM instead of the Microsoft UAM, and send the passwork in clear text.

See this for more on what is going on with your alias. I beat my head against this wall to. I'm going to try the advice in this to see if it works.
