After my recent re-install of Win 2K I have the yellow ex. mark in front of the PCI controller. What does the PCI controller do and how do I fix the problem with it? Thanks.Other than that, I'm very happy with the re-install.

I forgot to include that: Code 28 is given for the reason. Also, the PCI controller is using IRQ 5

I am researching the issue right now. Need to know if you bypassed HAL and made it a Std PC instead of using the ACPI setting?
Just to give you some bacground reading on how PCI works, check out this article from Intel: http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/PC1001.HTM

To the best of my knowledge, I didn't by-pass HAL. I took mostly the default setting during the install.I've seen code 28 mentioned before, but don't remenber what it means. Thanks for the help.

I think the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" is your modem. Try installing the drivers for your modem.

Yes there is a very good chance that it is a software modem. As sugessted instal the driver. these modems usually use IRQ5(P.S. Good luck.)

I've got it narrowed down to the modem, but I am unable to locate a driver for it. The modem is: Conexant SoftK56 data, fax, voice PCI Modem. This is the dial-up modem, I'm using a cable modem to access the internet, but would like to get it working anyway. Would anyone know where I can get the drivers? I've looked at the Askey Computer Corp. site, unable to determine which driver is the correct one. Thanks.

That code 28 PCI code? Do happen to see if it says. MASS STOREGAE CONTROLLER? That's a common error. IF that's what you see.
What you have to do is get your motherboard cd. eg(I have an Asus A7V motherboard with amd cpu.)
I had the same problem until I figured out that the PCI mass storage controller drive is located on the motherboard cd that came with your motherboard. Delete the driver from device manager and reboot computer. When the wizard pops up up to install the PCI mass controller just make sure to specify where the driver is located nothing alse should be checked. Ok now click on browse , click on your cd icon to open the cd disk. Look for the promise folder. Then select your OS eg(win2k) then click ok. What you are installing is Win200 Promise Ultra 100 IDE controller.
I hope this helps.

Doug, thanks for the D/L link for the modem upgrade. I'll run it in a while, then let you know how it works.
