I've got a NT Server 4.0 running SP6a and it has a 3com NIC in it. I put in a 3com/US Robotics 56k Win modem and without installing the modem, just by inserting it into the PCI slot the NIC won't work anymore. I can install the modem fine, but I need both to work. Any ideas?

Thanks
Robb

Try a different PCI slot first.

Thank you. I did try a different slot and it installed like a charm. Now both modem and network card work great together. I'm curious, how are the PCI slots setup so this causes a conflict?

Thanks
Robb

probably sharing resources -- IRQ, etc -- and causing a conflict. Have experienced the same problem before although when i put a soundcard instead of a modem in the slot, it works fine though i manually installed it.

The PCI slots share resources with on-board motherboard devices (HD controllers, etc..). Sometimes you just get a card in the slot that it doesn't like. It has to do with PCI steering.

Glad that worked for you!
