Is there a generic video driver that I can use for my new ProView Monitor that will correctly display 256 color rather than 16-bit color? I have the Service Pack for Windows NT 4.0. I don't know which driver matches my video adapter. I am using a Pentium 533 with a ProView 17 inch color graphics monitor. The monitor did not come with driver software.

The video driver is associated with the video card, not the monitor. Any modern monitor will be capable of displaying 256 colours plus.

You need to identify the make of video card in your computer, obtain and install a Windows NT driver for it and then set the video settings as you want them.

If you right-click on empty space on your desktop, select Properties, select the Settings tab and then select Display Type at the bottom of the window, you will see a button at the top right that says Detect. Use this to detect the video card you have.

If this doesn't work, try the documentation / disks that came with the PC or try opening up the box and visually inspecting the video card.

If you've tried all this and still cannot identify the video card, ask your local technical shop or a knowledgable friend to have a look inside for you.

PS: Make sure you have an updated Service pack installed as some video drivers require this. I would recommend SP5, some would recommend SP6a. Either one will do.
