I have a win 95 (fat 32), 5 gb hd. I also just recently installed linux. im using LILO to choose my os. I want to install win nt4.0 and get rid of win 95. is that posssible? if not how do i have 3 diff os without reinstalling win or deleting any program in my hd?

Yes it is possible. If you boot off the NT boot disks, you will be able to delete the Win95 partition and create a new partitiuon for NT.

If you want to keep Win95, you need to use Partition Magic to reduce the size of the partition to 2Gb and convert it to FAT16.

Search this forum for dual boot and you'll find lots of posts on this topic.

response from another BB:

hey
no can-do babe...
linux will not detect the ntfs....
also nt install will not detect a fat 32......

nt will not install on fat 32..
you will have to blow it away...

however...
partition magic "claims" to be able to convert that fat 32 back to fat 16...

then you may be able to install nt...

let's see here ...
you can't use ntfs for nt...
(linux can't see it )
(actually lilo can't see it)

so install nt on a fat 16

how about this...

fips out a partition... ( you know fips )
make that a fat 16 ..install nt..
use the nt bootloader...
this gives you the choice in lilo of booting to linux or to the nt partition...
then after that choice is made ,...
you can then choose between nt and 95...

what you want is what i got...\

however i use system commander deluxe....

system commander detects everthing.....

i tried installing nt on a fat32 system
it was ^$%76%&$%^$ %^&&*&&$^**&(*&%. !!!!

just see if you can fips out a nt partition...
but if you don't have system commaner
do not use the ntfs option....

that's as clear as mud right...!!??

you have config problems...
you need a bootloader that will detect everything...

so i hope this helps....
you MAY be able to pull it off

do you feel lucky punk?

my follow up q:

why do i have to go to fat 16 from fat 32?
my linux /win 95 setup works perfectly.
how would the fat 16 help me install nt?
also i dont have a copy of an nt boot disk, only the cd... if you know what imean?
also? can i install nt (given it is fat 16, and get rid of win 95)
w
how would fips help me here?

response to hwmc:

The simplest way to do this is:

1. Boot into Win95 with the NT CD in the drive.
2. Run <cd drive>:\i386\winnt32 /ox This will create three setup disks so you need to have three 3.5" floppies ready.
3. Boot off the setup floppy disks.
4. Use NT to delete the Win9x partition and create a new partition in it's place.
5. Install NT in the new drive C:

This will affect the ability of Linux to boot so I imagine you will have to re-install your LILO - I don't know how you do that but NT will work!

ok i cand do the boot disk.
my follow up q:
i already created another partition in my extended partition
my main part is 2gb (c:,fat 32), the 2nd partition is 1gb (d:, fat32, planning to make my linux partition), 3rd partition ( i used partition magic and made it NTFS, i cannot see this drive in win 95)..now can i make my pc triple boot then erase win 95 after i transfer all my programs... or can i cant transfer my programs bec of the filesystem conflict?

ok people this is the situation now.. forget everything....
i have no more linux..ok..here goes
i have two partition
1- is 2.5 gig and system is unknown, and in fdisk it says non-dos
2-is 1.2gb- where my new win95 is installed..
heres what happened
i installed win nt last nite and it said restart and will continue.. then i restart and hangs up in where iut says "verifying dmi pool data" and never recover froim there... with all my screwing around i lost my win 95 partition and had to install win 95 again on a diff part.

my quuestion is : how can i recover my old win 95 part.. it says in fdisk as a NON-DOS partition?

Sounds like you're going to need a program like Lost & Found. This is from the same people who make Partition Magic and it recovered all the data from an entire 1Gb partition for me that had been completely destroyed.

You may wonder why the makers of Partition Magic also make Lost & Found??? If you're careful, they're both great programs. If you're not careful....you need both!

to all people concerned:
i was able to retrieve my old win 95 partition. i did a lot of fdisking and stuff but here is waht i did:

first i went to linux fdisk and change the partition type to dos 16bit>32Mb and then i exited the linux fdisk,,, lo and behold when i rebooted of my new win 95 partition a new drive appeared..yes you are right my old win 95.. so removed the windows dir of the new part. and replace it wiith the old part... it gave me some errors but i persisted and to make the story short i was able to restore all of them...you might try this but im not sure if it will work.. all i can say is thanks toi everybody who helped me.

by the way i cant make fat 32 to fat 16 in partition magic...
