Lightning fast SQL databases for NT4?

I need to find a fast, plain and simple SQL/ODBC database for a web project. I can live without the overhead of a pretty interface, as long as everything goes by the SQL book. MS Access is no good, and I would rather not invest in Oracle or Sybase either.

Any suggestions?
