I am reasonably happy with the full IE8 in general but one thing I do miss is the facility to display the URL contained in a hyperlink on a web page.

I think in previous versions you ticked a box in advanced options to "Display Friendly URLs" or possibly "Links" but I cannot see that in IE8. When you hovered your mouse over a link the actual URL came up on the left hand side of the bottom bar and it was very useful for diagnosing badly constructed hyperlinks or deliberately misleading ones.

Is there still a way to do this or have Microsoft dumped this facility for some valid reason?

My IE8 shows the URL in the lower left corner just like IE7,

Check VIEW->Tools bars->STATUS BAR and make sure it's selected.

Quite right, Steve!

That was the cause of the problem...

Thanks as ever for your advice.
