Hello all, i am having a problem with the internet on all users on my PC 3 users.

I have tried checking for viruses with Avast, a few little problems solved, still slow.
Tried emptying the usual, still slow.

Threatfire found nothing.

I have Avast, threatfire, Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Superanti-spyware, Zonealarm, Winpatrol installed.

Can you list for me a few things to try.

Thanks, GEP

Three computers, or three users on one computer?
Router involved? What type of connection? What's your ISP advertised speed, and what are you getting?

Hello Broni and all, on NTL broadband 10 MB. Download 9608 kps, upload 455kps.

Usually alot faster than it is now. Tried different times of the day of the last few days, still the same problem.

Three users. Two usually.

Thanks, GEP

Power cycle the modem.
Reach back and unplug the power from the modem, wait one minute, plug power back in, when it is back up test.

on NTL broadband 10 MB. Download 9608 kps
9608kbps=9.6Mbps
Pretty close to advertised speed.

In that case, I don't think resetting the modem will help any.
The download speed checks out OK, which means the connection is fine, but since loading pages takes forever, you either have browser problem, or more general computer problem.
What browser/version do you use? Did you try another browser?
Post some computer info: processor type, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space

gep--Ah, ha. Another victim for my canned suggestions.

"1) Disk Cleanup. There are several ways to reach it. One is Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|DiskCleanUp. That will start a scan of the PC to tell you what files might be deleted or compressed. (The scan takes a while.) I would certainly delete Temporary Internet Files, Temp files, Downloaded Program Files and probably Compress Old Files. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312 for details.
2) Then I would run ErrorChecking. (left click on MyComputer||right click on C:\ drive icon (assuming that is your hard drive)|Tools|Error Checking. Check the box "Automatically fix file system errors". Click Start (within the error checking window). You will be told to reboot. Do so. Error checking will then run as part of the reboot. It can take a while.
3) Start|Run|type MSCONFIG|OK|Startup tab. WinXP actually needs very few thirdparty programs (the ones you see in msconfig) to run at start. Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware, programs associated with wireless connections such as mouse, network, etc. would be among the few. Uncheck the box to the left of any program you feel you do not need at startup. Click Apply. This site will help you make decisions what you do and do not need http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
4) Run Disk Defragmenter. ((left click on MyComputer||right click on C:\ drive icon (again assuming that is your hard drive)|Tools|Disk Defragmenter|Defrag Now click Analyze) Unless the analysis shows defragmentation is not needed, proceed to run Defragment. That also takes a while."

That does not work as advertized all the time. Still need to get into the tif and double check. I would say 90% of the time I have had to. :(

I hope that 131MB free space was actually 131GB. 131MB would be lower than you want.

Do you use any *****peer software?

Check what programs are in start-up (start-run-msconfig-startup tab) maybe there is something utilising your connection that you are unaware of.

Is the slow connection true for all sites you try to view?

Connection speed does not always = download/page load speed. Have you contacted ntl to find out if they have probs in your area?

of the 186 159 is NOW free
I'm still hoping, this is 159GB free, not 159MB free.
Please, clarify.

Ok, reach in back of the modem, unplug the power, wait 1 minute, plug power back in and when the modem is back up try it again.
Not unusual for modems to jam and need that done. Had to do it this last Friday to mine.

Hello Train, Broni, techallenged & all, Train, pulled the plug, maybe still the same?? Say maybe, if i open a second internet window, then all is ok, speeds quick. On the opening first window, all internet sites take around 15 seconds to start appearing.
Also, if i hit Refresh, things quicken up.

techallenged - No peer to peer software. I have removed some start ups.

Broni, i have 186, used 27GB left 159 free.

Broni, have copied file to a post in HiJackThisLogfiles.

Thanks, GEP
